Penny

Penny 9.2.1800 at King's / 4.4.1802 mrs Penny at King's / 15.5.1812 L Penny at Lamb's

A Chancery suit of 1805 (Nat Arch c13/57/37) was between Catherine Penny plaintiff and Augustus Richard Butler Danvers & others defendants. There were several Chancery suits involving Butler Danvers often against other former guests at John King's like Robert Derville and James Stevenson. These did not necessarily mean that the parties were no longer friendly, there were various legal reasons for starting "friendly" suits. But it makes a fairly good identifier of Mrs Penny as having been called…

Probably Samuel Parr's godson and pupil the Rev William Phillips of Ealing Hants mentioned in his will and in the diary of Rev John Morley (see Morley, John) as a pupil of Parr's in May 1797. He matriculated Trinity College Oxford 6.11.1797 age 19.  His father William Phillips (c.1752 - 1828) was notorious as "the inventor of illegal insurance in the lottery", and ran a high-class gambling den at his house at 40 Pall Mall. He was said to have been acquitted of highway robbery at York when a young man and,…

In her will PCC 1818 Sarah Elwes mentioned her friend Dr George Pinckard and since Godwin noted him at Elwes' in 1799 and 1817 this was probably George Pinckard DNB 1768-1835 who was physician to the Bloomsbury Dispensary…

The first entry is complicated by the fact that Platts is a fairly common surname, though coming next to Gadagnes suggests it is the plural of Platt, a much commoner surname. Mrs Platt in 1798 could have been the actress of that name (Highfill, Burnim & Langhans S.J.Platt 1743-1800). The Platt at Carisbrooke…

Prescot

Prescot 21.3.1802 at King's / 4.4.1802 again / 9.12.1809 call on Prescot

The 1802 entries at King's must have been Thomas Leveson Prescott who was involved in John King's Portland Bank scandal, (see also Lathorp / Rogers, George / & Davis, William).
