Bullock

Bullock 4.3.1798 on coach to Bath

A fairly common name met once on a coach would be hardly worth identifying had it not been for his fellow passenger D'Esterre. Captain Henry Bullock of the East India Company ship "United Kingdom" sailed to Madras & Bengal 1801-2, D'Esterre captained the same ship in 1807-9'. Possibly one of 4 Henry Bullocks in PCC wills - 1808 of Stanwell, Middlesex / 1829 of Lambeth / 1831 of Wroughton, Wilts / 1841 of Stanwell, Middlesex

Bulmer, William

8.3.1792 Bulmer / 10.3.1792 again / 26.3.1792 again / 31.3.1792 again / 16.4.1792 again / 5.5.1792 again / 30.3.1795 again.

These are all calls and appear to be connected to John Cooper and the arrangements for his apprenticeship. On 26.3 and 5.5 Godwin calls on Bulmer immediately after calling on Dorset, who paid the premium for John Cooper's apprenticeship to Spilsbury (see 18.5.92 JC goes to Spilsbury and my earlier para 11/a/b), and on 31.3 Godwin calls on Bulmer with JC. This makes it more likely to be William Bulmer printer of Cleveland Row, St James, later in partnership…

Robert son of Francis Burdett DNB 1770-1844 born 16.4.1796 died 1880 and his sister Sophia who married 23.10.1833 Robert Otway Cave and died 1849

B Jones 9.3.1806 at Tooke's

This may have referred to Sir Francis Burdett, who after the death of his aunt Lady Jones, "took the name of Jones by royal licence 5.4.1800 but only briefly affected it" (historyofparliamentonline) or possibly to his younger brother William Jones Burdett 1774-1840. Both have person records in the GD website, and Godwin had several times…

Rev Richard Burgh of Dublin aged 30 was convicted in 1793 along with Townley Macan and others of a conspiracy to blow up the King's Bench prison. He doesn't seem to have been in Newgate in 1795 but may have been an inmate of the Giltspur St Compter with Gerald

Burke, Edmund

f 46r of Vol VII of Godwin's diary after 24.9.1796 and before the "1796 list": Burke inherits £300 per annum, obtained by his elder brother in the character of a discoverer. C

Edmund Burke DNB 1730-1797 according to which he inherited in 1765 from his brother Garrett a small estate in Clogher co. Cork. Not sure what is meant by discoverer or who C was, presumably the source of the story, maybe Calonne, Canning, Carlisle, Coleridge or Cooper

Burne

Burne's, Carlow 4.8.1800 tea / 8.8.1800 dine at Burne's (not in Carlow?) / 2.10.1800 (in London) meet Burne / 8.10.1800 meet Burne, Dogherty & Goold / 27.9.1804 Burne at H Rowan's / 20.9.1805 Burne & Curran dine / 9.10.1805 call on Curran (not in), Burne (not in)

Since Godwin began the day of 8.8.1800 seeing St Cavan's Bed at Glendalough nr Wicklow and then returned to the Dublin area it seems unlikely that he went back to Carlow to dine (and this is confirmed by his letter Bodleian Abinger c6 f36v) so the Burne's of 8.8.1800 was probably a different venue from that of 4.8.…

Busby, Thomas

Busbys at Philips 13.5.1802. In Godwin's 1796 list for 1802

The six other instances of Busby in Godwin's diary have all been coded on GD website to Thomas Busby DNB 1754-1838. This one was probably missed because it was plural. Busby appeared 5 times at Sir Richard Phillips DNB 1767-1840 and Busby's DNB article mentions their connection, so it is strange that Busby appeared in the 1796 list in 1802 when Godwin had already noted him at Phillips' in 1801, and the attribution of a 1794 Busby to him seems probable. His name in the 1796 list has not been coded to his person record either…
