Walker, John

J Walker was in Godwin's 1796 list near the end of 1788, crossed out, and in 1794 version as John Walker.
Since Godwin saw him after dining at George Robinson's this may well have been Robinson's brother-in-law 'the book-auctioneer of the trade' mentioned in the DNB article on the Robinson family of booksellers. But John Walker was a very common name.

Apart from the last two who were presumably the same person, these may have all been different people. Wallis in Ireland could have been the postmaster of Carlow (see Wallace, Arthur) coming to consult Curran about his trial. The Dublin Evening Post also spelt his name Wallis in the first instance. When Godwin uses brackets it generally means saw but didn't speak to, as with celebrities at the theatre. William Wellesley-Pole DNB 1763-1845 brother of the future Duke of Wellington, was probably Pole. Walpoles may have been two MPs, Horatio Walpole History of Parliament 1783-1858, and his uncle George Walpole History of Parliament 1758-1835. German regiment of Walstein to West Indies (Telegraph 13.8.1796). Count Walstein in Fashionable News (Morning Post 23.4.1805 & others 1806 -7). Ferdinand Ernst Graf Waldstein 1762-1823 was in English military service from about 1795 till 1805 and remained in England for some years afterwards, best known as a composer and patron of music to whom Beethoven dedicated a sonata (Constant von Wurzbach, Biographisches Lexikon vol 51-2 p 231). William Walters was at Hoxton with Godwin and was a dissenting minister at Nottingham from 1791 or earlier. His will PCC 1806 mentioned his wife Alice and daughter Jane (baptised Nottingham 1793) and miece Maria daughter of his brother David Walters of Clapham, and James Woodbridge of Richmond

sisters of the deceased Caroline Matilda nee Want, Basil Montagu's (DNB 1770-1851) first wife. They were daughters of Robert Want of the Temple (attorney who died Nov 1777 at his house in Fetter Lane) and his wife Eden will PCC 1782 widow. By 1787 Henrietta was married to the Rev Charles Holworthy and Cassandra to Robert Godby. Elizabeth had married Rev John Smith by 1802 (and probably by 1797). Catherine Eden Want will PCC 1811, Charlotte Want will PCC 1803, and Arabella were all unmarried in 1797
