Bray

12.10.1806 Bray at dinner at H Tooke's

The only time Bray occurs as a persaon's name in Godwin's diary. Henry H Bray seems a likely candidate as he lived at Wimbledon near to Tooke. His father was Michael Bray of Lincolns Inn who as a widower married at Walcot St Swithin's Somerset on 4.12.1785 Catherine Darell otp sp by lic sigs witsJohn Monck, Francis Plowden. This last witness was very likely Francis Peter Plowden (DNB 1749-1829) who like Michel Bray was a Catholic conveyancer called to the bar when restrictions on Catholics were lifted (Bray at Lincolns Inn 1795). In the year of…

Breach

30.11.1795 Breach's at miss Jones's

The will PCC 1813 of Mary Breach spinster of Bath dated 27.11.1801 was witnessed by Richard Jones, linendraper Bath. This was probably the Richard Jones, brother of Margaret & Louisa Jones, whose father Arthur was a linen draper at Bath. Mary Breach's will mentions her sister Charlotte, her brother John and her brother Thomas, who proved the will 30.6.1813 with his name changed to Thomas Raymond. A Mr Breach of Bath subscribed to Ann Wingrove's Poems published at Bath 1795, other subscribers among Godwin's Bath contacts in 1798 were Mr Bull,…

Brian

7.8.1806 Brian & Mulready call

The only Brian in Godwin's diary. There are a number of examples of O'Brien and O'Briens but none of Brien Briens Brians O'Brian or O'Brians. No reason to think Brian was connected to Mulready who may have just happened to call on the same morning.

This was possibly Peter Brian who lived near Godwin at 4 Charles St, Clarendon Square, Somers Town (Holden's directory 1811). He was there in Land Tax records from 1809, I couldn't find records for Charles Street before that date. He may have been the Peter Brian at 7 Cooks Row, St Pancras (Holden…

Bristow

A common name but I have looked for connections with the West Indies, as some of Newton's friends had, with lawyers as Wybourn and Croke were there, and with theatre as Incledon was there. See work notes

GODWIN DIARY  20.11.1795 Bromley at Carr's

He was the son of John Bromley attorney of Wigan, born about 1731 admitted Grays Inn 1759, married 1764 Mary dau of Stretch Cowley, (mariner of Liverpool and Stepney who died 1770 at Bonny in Africa), variously morning preacher at Foundling…

Brook

26.3.1795 at King's / 11.1.1796 there.

In John Taylor's Records of My Life vol.1 he mentioned his friend Samuel Brook who had a good opinion of John King, but Taylor was only noted 3 times at King's out of 100 meals Godwin took there, and not on the 2 occasions when Brook was there
