Mcgrain v Armstrong

K B, Mcgrain v. Armstrong 8.7.1800 / 12.7.1800 Macgray (at Curran's?)

Perhaps John Warneford Armstrong Dict Irish Biog 1770-1858 noted for his active suppression amd harsh treatment of rebels and radicals. The only possibility I could find for Mcgrain/Macgray was Dublin Trades 1797 George Magrane hat manufacturer and merchant. K B was presumably Kings Bench. Sadly I don't have easy access to Dublin newspapers which may have covered this case

Moira

9.7.1800 dine at la. Moira's / 11.7.1800 call on Moira / 24.7.1800 again / 1.8.1800 call on la. Moira / 9.8.1800 dine at la. Moira's / 13.4.1808 Countess of Moira dies / 28.11.1826 Hastings dies

The two calls on Moira in Dublin were between two dinners at La. Moira's. Otherwise Godwin only recorded their deaths, using the name Hastings for Lord Moira. It is possible that Moira in 1800 referred to Lady Moira and that Godwin never met Lord Moira. See Francis Hastings DNB 1754-1826 and Elizabeth Rawdon DNB 1731-1808.

Moore (Ireland)

Moore 9.7.1800 at Lady Moira's / 12.7.1800 at Curran's / 28.7.1800 Devil's Glen with Lady Mountcashell, Mrs Moore & 2 enfants; dine, with them at Dunran / 5.8.1800 Arthur Moore at Wallace's trial at Carlow / 11.10.1801 Helen & Jane M dine (in Oxford) / 19.11.1801 H & J Moore call / 21.11.1801 C Mountcashel, H, J & miss Wilmot call

The first 2 entries above are coded in the GD website to John Moore DNB 1729=1802 but there's no reason to think he was in Ireland in 1800. Leaving aside those who supported the union with Britain as unlikely to have been at Curran's (…

Mountcashell

her 21.7.1800

clearly referred to Lady Mountcashell who has a person record in GD website

Nicol, George

2.3.1789 Nicol & Potts at Robinson's / 9.3.1789 same pair at Hamilton's. In 1794 version of Godwin's 1796 list, Nicol near end of 1787, left out of 1796 version.

George Nicol DNB 1740-1828 bookseller and James Potts (R Pollard, Dublin Book Trade 1733-96) seem a likely pair to have been dining with these publishers (and see Jenkins, Caleb)

O'Byrne

11.2.1796 at Lauderdale's O'Byrne / 3.3.1796 at Col Barry's Byrne / 7.11.1803 at H Rowan's O Byrne / 3.2.1804 again / 15.11.1804 again / 14.12.1808 call on Byrne / 24.12.1812 write to N Byrne.   In Godwin's 1796 list for 1796

For the first two entries above perhaps Capt Gregory O'Byrne of 15th dragoons, Irish gamester 1779 (Walpole Correspondence 25:12) of 84 Pall Mall 1792 of 31 Clarges St 1799, in Paris 1802 and seized at English Customs for bringing back wine (see Morning Post 29.12.1801, 21.4.1802, 13.12.1802). Clearly N Byrne of 1812 was not him but was probably Nicholas Byrne…

O'Hara

SOCIETY FOR CONSTITUTIONAL INFORMATION: John Hamilton O'Hara original member 1780

GODWIN DIARY: O'Hara 30.1.1805 at H Rowan's / 8.10.1806 meet O'Hara (with Curran) / 20.9.1808 dine at O'Hara's (with Curran) / 26.9.1808 O'Hara calls / 5.10.1808 call on O'Hara / 15.9.1810 O'Hara calls / 29.11.1810 call on O'Hara / 4.6.1811 O'Hara calls

Quite likely Charles O'Hara 1746-1822 M P for Sligoshire from 1776. In 1811 his London address was Limmer's Hotel, Conduit-st. Opposed the Union but retained his seat, he was rather nervously in opposition to the government. See History of…

Some suggestions. In Edward O'Reilly Dict Irish Biog 1765-1830 his brother Andrew died 1862, United Irishman & Paris correspondent of the Times. As Andrew Eugene O'Reilly of 17 Rue Lepelethere Paris he was witness in 1838 to the will of Lewis Goldsmith DNB 1763/4-1846. Ogilvie

Ogilvie 25.9.1800 at mrs Plunket's

Ogilvie or Ogilvy was a common name but mainly Scottish, as mrs Plunket's gathering was probably mainly Irish this could have been William Ogilvie Dict Irish Biog 1740-1832. William Ogilvie DNB 1736-1819 who wrote to Godwin 28.7.1793 (Bodleian Abinger c2 f26) and whose book (te 0263 in GD website) Godwin had read on 13.11.1792 and 14.11.1792, he also read on 28.11.1792 and 12.12.1792 but these have not been coded to that text on GD website. (He was not likely to have been the Ogilvie at Plunket's)

Quin

Quins 16.7.1800 at Reeves's / 22.7.1800 Quins at Burton's

GD website has coded these to Edward Turnly Quin DNB 1762-1823 which is probably right for later Quins in London, but though he was Irish there were many Quins in Ireland and Quin didn't appear in Godwin's diary with Curran in London until 1817. E T Quin married in London in 1793 and the DNB says nothing more about his whereabouts till 1803 when he became editor of the Traveller
